Glenunga International High School

Glenunga International High School

Glenunga International High School is one of three selective schools in Adelaide offering the Ignite program. The prestigious school has been running the program for over two decades with great response from its students and community. The program is catered to gifted students, allowing them to learn alongside like-minded peers in a supportive environment. However, selection into the program is limited and competitive. Each year Glenunga accepts 100 students via the Ignite program. Students that qualify for the program are assured entry into Glenunga, irrespective of whether they fall into the local catchment zone or not.

Glenunga takes a holistic approach to education and learning, focusing not only on academic excellence but the development of good character and teamwork as well. This equips students with life skills they can utilize beyond school, preparing them for success in the future. There are three program offerings the Ignite program delivers.

Compacted Program

Students that wish to challenge themselves are given the opportunity to accelerate their learning if they wish. This means that Years 7, 8, and 9 can be condensed into two years of learning rather than the standard three. Students may choose to accelerate core subjects including mathematics, English, science, and the humanities. Furthermore, in Years 11 and 12, students have the flexibility to undertake university-level units in association with The University of Adelaide, Flinders University, and the University of South Australia. In addition to this, students may also choose to undertake the International Baccalaureate program, which offers international qualification and recognition for higher education worldwide.

Compacted Mathematics And Science

If students select this offer, they are provided the opportunity to learn these subjects at a deeper level. Students will be extended to use their minds in critical and logical thinking problems. The program allows for vertical acceleration where students will be able to complete mathematics and science subjects in Years 8, 7, and 9 in two years rather than the standard three. Similar to the compacted program, students are offered to study university-level topics, but only pertaining to those related to mathematics and science.

Holistic Education Groups

This program is tailored to students whose talents are diverse in not only core subjects but also elective studies such as technologies, art, drama, physical education, languages, and more. Particularly those drawn to literature and the arts will enjoy a great range of inspiring and evocative texts in English, as well as real-world applicable humanity studies focusing on history and geography. While there is no vertical acceleration or compacting of grades, students will experience an enriching, specialized program that will enhance every learning area.

No matter the program, every Ignite group will experience an innovative learning journey, unlike conventional education.
